Curators in Training Programme

Junior curator for prints and drawings

In cooperation with the Rijksmuseum’s Print Room, the Fondation Custodia is organizing a curators in training programme to support the art on paper specialization for art historians who want to work in a museum.

It is a two-year internship programme for two young candidates who recently completed masters degrees in art history and who want to specialize in works on paper.

This programme provides the opportunity to work for a year as a junior curator at the Fondation Custodia in Paris, where the Frits Lugt Collection is, followed by a second year at the Print Room of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The goal of the programme is to give young art historians the chance to acquire experience at both locations by actively participating in all facets of working with a collection of prints and drawings, including management, acquisitions, documentation and publications. The junior curator will play a part in staging an exhibition of works from the collection of the Rijksmuseum and/or the Fondation Custodia. In so doing the junior curator will learn the principles of attribution, to identify graphical techniques and to write appropriate descriptions of artworks. He or she will also supply contributions to an exhibition or collection catalogue. The junior curator will in addition develop a knowledge of historical collections by, for example, working with the Marques de collections website, and learn about the functioning and dynamic of the art market.

Requirements

Suitable candidates have completed a masters in art history, they are drawn to works of art on paper and they have the ambition to specialize in this field. They are cooperative and flexible, and they have good social and communication skills as well as sound analytical ability. Finally, they have a good command of English and at least a basic knowledge of French and/or Dutch.
